Measure & Install

Getting the right size takes about two minutes and a tape measure. Installing takes a few minutes more. Here's how.

Step 1: Measure your piling

Hold your tape measure straight across the top of the piling, passing through the center. Take four measurements:

How to Measure Your PilingLooking straight down at the top of the pilingNSEWNENWSESW1. N to S2. E to W3. NE to SW4. NW to SERound your largest measurement up to the nearest ½"
  1. North to South
  2. East to West
  3. Northeast to Southwest
  4. Northwest to Southeast

Pilings are rarely perfectly round, so your four measurements may differ a little. That's normal. Take the largest measurement and round it up to the nearest ½ inch. That's your cap size.

Example: If your largest measurement is 9.25", order the 9.5" cap. If it's exactly 9.5", order the 9.5" cap.

We make sizes from 7" to 14" in half-inch increments. Measuring more than one piling? Measure each one, since pilings on the same dock can vary.

Step 2: Install your cap

Every cap comes with three pre-drilled holes and three 316 stainless steel screws. All you need is a drill or impact driver with a Phillips bit.

  1. Place the cap on top of the piling.
  2. Hold it in place with one hand.
  3. With the other hand, slowly drive each screw in through the pre-drilled holes.

That's it.

Tip: Installing several caps? For a clean look down the pier, turn each cap so the screws line up the same way on every piling. It's just a finishing touch, so don't worry about getting it perfect.
